In the 1980s, Michelangelo Antonioni traveled with his partner, actress and filmmaker Enrica Fico Antonioni, to Japan with the intent of creating a documentary, Un viaggio in Giappone, that would chronicle “the social transformations undergoing in Japan through the experimental use of new film technologies,” specifically the Betacam. Un po' di Giappone is the shortened version of the documentary.

The tapes were occasioned by a TV interview Michaelangelo Antonioni gave to the godfather of postwar Italian cinema, Gian Luigi Rondi, in 1985 wherein he mentioned visiting the Sony camera factory in Japan. Little is known about the exact reasons the Italian director travelled to Japan in the mid 80s, aside from some generic research purposes that coalesced in the final edit of Un viaggio in Giappone (1990), then edited down to the shortened version Un pò di Giappone.

After the release of "Nostalgia", Andrei Tarkovsky runs out his Soviet authorities permission to work abroad: he has to go back home. But he understands from the messages of some friends and colleagues that his life in Russia would be even tougher than before.
